Food facilities, that manufacture, process, pack or hold human food for distribution in the U.S. and required to register with FDA under sec. 415 of the FD&C Act, are mandated to have a written food safety plan. These rules (21 CFR 117.1) apply to domestic food processors and processors from countries who export to the United States. The course on the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) will give the new definition of a Food Importer or FSVP Importer, explain the new set of FSMA regulations for food importers published on November 27, 2015, and discuss how importers can comply with the requirements. Since the focus of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is to prevent contamination rather than primarily to react to problems as they occur, the intent of the FSVP is to verify that all foods distributed in the U.S. provide the same level of public health protection as the Preventive Controls and Produce Safety regulations, if applicable, and are not adulterated or misbranded with respect to allergen labeling.
At the end of the FSVP course, participants will learn ways to ensure that their foreign food suppliers distributing food in the U.S. apply the same level of public health protection (i.e., same U.S. standards of safety) to those imported foods. Upon successful completion of all course requirements as described in the brochure, participants will receive an FSVP certificate from FSPCA.
